Hey Darrin;
Over the past ten years I have come to rely heavily on the Internet Archive. It is an amazing repository of almost everything you could imagine especially having to do with culture and society. You can find everything from thousands of radio airchecks (recordings of actual radio broadcast from as far back as the 20s) as well as many libraries that lend books on line from an hour to two weeks.
Of course the Archive is under threat (and has been) by corporate interests trying to shut it or parts of it down. I guess it isn't enough that they make money over fist off other people's backs (work) long after they're dead. But they want try and restrict access to as much as they possibly can. Currently there are many many aspects to the way this is being done.
I wouldn't have too much of a problem over this if it wasn't' for the fact that despite these corporation's constant propaganda leading people to believe they do it to protect the artist's interests, but that isn't true. Artists regardless of their media; music, books, image art, etc., do not make all that much money off their work unless they're so massive in popularity that they can demand it. Or they can publish and control their own material themselves. I have aquantinces who have refused to sign with recording companies for this very reason. They quite well for themselves publshing their own material, reaping 100 percent of the profits, and sticking it to the recording industry.
Otherwise your average artist is only getting single digit compensation of some kind for their work. The rest goes to the suits at ASCAP/BMI, the recording companies, the publishing houses, etc., ad nauseum.
Unfortunately these companies, like most have the horn, and thus use it to propagandize and program the masses as necessary. A process that is far easier than I once believed.
Anyway, if you find that the Archive really is up your alley, please consider making a donation, as they really need it. They are in a battle with publishing companies right now who are trying to close down access to the lending area which is asinine. There is no difference between a library or university lending at a physical location or online. :)
But that was what Reagan wanted when he stated he wanted this to be an ownership society. If you want to read a book, no more libraries you are to go to a store and buy it. This is a thinking that flies in the face of society building, which is one of many reasons why ours has become so incohesive these past four decades.
